My Shiny New DSLR

Posted on 22. Oct, 2009 by naresh in Blog, Personal

Well Its not new anymore as I have been using it for 2 months now, anyway I got myself an entry level DSLR Canon EOS 500D with the basic 18-55mm Lens and also a 70-300mm lens with 1:2 macro mode from Tamron, I have taken quite a few pics and I have to say it has been amazing, and is a giant step forward form the Canon S5-IS which I have used before. I will be posting the photos taken on this camera in the next few days after I have posted all the photos I like which I took before getting this new camera.Even though the camera is supposed to be a Sub $1000 camera at the end of the day buying extra memory cards, batteries, and lens and a LowerPro bag put the pricing around $1400 and at least now i think I can do photography at my will.

India’s Obama

Posted on 15. May, 2009 by naresh in Personal

It has been a long time since I blogged about something, it seems like the blog has went dead, I was so busy with everything that is new in my life that it seems like I have lost track of time and the larger picture is, become invisible, for the longest time I have thought about mobile blogging but have never been able to get a hang of it, then I read somewhere that a person in uk has written nearly 60% of a bestselling book on his ipaq, so I am trying this out. As with everything else I might get bored and move on to the next interesting thing, but till then this is my first mobile blog,
First of all I would like expand the topics on which I blog (I am not sure on how long I will blog about them)
This is about a program I saw on NDTV about India’s Obama or should I say the lack of a person like him, those who know me know that I am really not a big fan of India’s political system, to put in simple words we never have a big picture when it comes to selecting our national leaders, we only care about our local candidates , even then it’s not about their charisma or ability but what party do they belong to, I have met supporters of candidates who support just because he belongs to that party, the candidates never debate on anything important other than a few mudslinging sessions, they don’t have a plan on what to do if they get elected and even after getting elected they don’t know who their leaders would be some are even ignorant enough to say that the party high command will decide the leaders whereas the party high command doesn’t even know what the vibe is.
I also have heard people say that it is easy to criticize someone from the outside, well lets go through a list of things that is required if you want to john politics in India. One you need money and that too a lot of it second you need a last name that is famous for at least 3 generations, both of which you have to be born into, there are few who have come through the route of hard work, but at their age they are already dying or nearly dead. Gandhi was a home person but he along with the best thing to happen to India was also the worst thing, in my opinion if was so focused on getting independence that after India got it he was unsure where to take it , he might of dreamt of a perfect nation which had administration from ground up, but it was the worst thing that happened, India was not and still not is mature enough to get that kind of administration, India still needs a leader with vision and ability to lead from top down and to be democratic we need to elect him or her directly, we need to know who is going to be in charge of running the country
All of this is not going to happen in the near future but there are a few things that can be done that would put into perspective where we are heading,
One there should be no room for post poll alliances you need to get to priorities straight before you fight an election
Two you need to project your leader and your plan beforehand including stuff like details of you foreign and economic policy
Third and the most important is that voting should be made compulsory
I don’t care who you are but you must vote, there should be on chalta hai attitude and don’t take holiday on a holiday, there should be a law which says that he you don’t vote you don’t get any benefits from government
Now the question arises can this be done, even if this is done can it bring improvements if any and at the end can India’s condition be any different than it is now, At least in my opinion these steps will take up one step forward and max be and just maybe we can move towards a better state
And what about Obama like person let us examine his qualities which we want in our leader
One he has to have a charisma, and I am not talking about just the outer layer, two he has to have ability to communicate, and not just talking but the ability to get everyone’s attention with just a few words,
Three he has to have a vision, fourth and the most important he has to have a unifying effect, he should get support from all corners,
Till date I have not seen anyone in India with all of their abilities, I can name a few who satisfy least 3 of the above, Advani is bit ok but the problem is that he is too old and he his much mixed up in the Ayodhya controversy to get support from all corners, Priyanka gandhi is promising but only time can tell if she matches up to the expectations, Narendra modi has 3 qualities but will never be able to unify people, Omar Abdullah is also promising but again time will be the judge of character, so till then let up hope that the leaders who rule will not damage the whole thing beyond repair – Naresh

Movies to Watch

Posted on 19. Jan, 2009 by naresh in Personal

I have never been a film buff , but i do manage to watch a fair share of them, I have never blogged about them , may be because i found it too much of work for a movie but there are few of them i would recommend everyone to watch, you might have seen all of them or some of them , the reasons why i liked them may differ and movies are from completely different genre but they all are must watch according to me.

This list is a short one, i am mentioning only those i remember now, i will be adding them as i remember

Wednesday
wednesdayA movie everyone must watch though unrealistic it portrays the current situation with common man and terrorism, the film doesn’t create controversy but it much more than what it seems on cover.

Slumdog Millionaire
slumdog

Look there has been lot of things mentioned about the movie showing India’s underbelly, but that means it exists right ?, This movie is must watch just because of the screenplay and direction, Yes there are a few scenes where you feel that , this should have not been shot that way , but overall its a good movie.

The Dark knight & Iron Man

darkknight

ironman

Mentioning both of them in the same line might not be best compliment to each, both are completely different superhero movies from stable of marvel comics but each one touches a different cord, there are some great performances, both could have been a little bit better, but both are must watch as they are.

Blood Diamond
blooddiamond A serious movie which looks into diamond mining and conflict in Africa as it not shown before, This move tops my list on provocative movies, it covers everything including how children are brainwashed and are made into soldiers, this movie shows the real underbelly without trying to.

I will add more as i remember and watch them

Get yourself a PHP framework

Posted on 05. Dec, 2008 by naresh in Featured Articles, Personal, Software

I started work in PHP way back in 2003, incidentally my first dynamic website for my own purpose which was hosted at naresh.cjb.cc (now lost in space) was also developed using PHP, back then i could not afford my own hosting space and used a free host, this was right after just keeping a html  page as my home for 2 years (which was a copy of .mac feature tour website setup in 2001), it had no database (free host), i used flat files (ini) for posting data because the only thing that i could do was enable write permissions on one directory, ( I’ll try to post this site at the last update in some place – if I get hold of the files), I then went into completely module development and php was only a fun thing till 2005, then I jumped into the contact center bandwagon and setup one in my own city, for outbound we used astguiclient along with asterisk, this worked great but looked bad (i mean really bad) , astguiclient used php , thus php become a primary only after development on this, I was able to collaborate with one more developer and one designer with in a month came up with a great looking version of the astguiclient and vicidial, too bad by then i was out of contact center to pursue better things, but this was made publicly available, then i got into professional php development, I developed numerous websites (and yet i don’t have my own portfolio) , in all this time i had to write the same things again and again, some times i copied lot of code, but it could not always work, it always felt like re inventing the wheel, and i was afraid to try the new and shiny php frameworks because if things did not work out i would end up re doing the whole thing,  But as luck would have it i got a project for developing a website for school which was near my hometown , Jnanadeepa School (currently available at www.jdsj.org), I thought this was the perfect opportunity to try php framework and I did use one “CodeIgnitor“, and i have to say frameworks are basic necessity, it saved my coding by at least 40% , and thought the framework was overkill for the jdsj website, i am sure that from now on what ever work i do will certainly be based on a php framework, i am not going to tell you which framework to use because this is your personal choice, but try one and I sure that you will ever go back, I am certainly going to point you to the page which compares all major frameworks (http://www.phpit.net/demo/framework%20comparison/chart.php), i have used cakephp, zend and codeignitor in different projects and  felt zend and codeignitor were great (cakephp is great – personally i did not feel “IT”), I saved lot of work. So hoping that you save your work time ..

What different could have been done about Mumbai?

Posted on 29. Nov, 2008 by naresh in Featured Articles, Personal

The things that have taken place in last 3 days have shook India in a way most of us never imagined, but after all the operations are over we can start to think to think about what had happened ?, What could have been done different ? Let us not think about how terrorists gained access into the hotels, how they were able to get such an amount of ammunition and explosives into the hotels, yes there was an intelligence failure at multiple ends and things could have done to prevent this. But let us try to examine what could been done different at least after we ended up in this situation, Let me base my assumptions based to the press meet conducted by the NSG commandos.
The commandos mentioned that the place was dark and filled with smoke of grenades, thus they couldn’t move easily as they couldn’t see. – I fail to understand how the top operations group of the company went in without night vision goggles and stuff which would help them out in these situations. This would only mean that even the country’s best are ill equipped, we can only imagine the state of other agencies.
They also mentioned that the terrorists were completely aware of the layout of the hotel and they were not which was a disadvantage – Any operation in a closed building would need the operatives to be briefed about the structure. Why were the NSGs not provided with the building plans when they were taking charge? If terrorists were able to get the layout and plans of a building why the NSG couldn’t ? Either the NSGs underestimated the terrorists, or they were briefed very wrong. At least after 12 hours of getting nowhere they could have at least studied the building plan.

The commandos mentioned that they weren’t able to reach the CCTV conrtol room beacuse of smoke and constant attack they were facing – A place like Taj or Oberoi for that matter would have networked CCTV system in place which could be accessed anywhere in the grid, I mean i know my home CCTV system which I got for 2k provides streaming over internet, then image the complexity and availability of the systems that would be in place at places like these,

And the most important of all, we were told that the operations took so much time because they had to do a floor by floor, room by room sweep which was pain staking – I am sure that India must have at least 4 of 5 spy satellites looking down, couldn’t anyone them have infrared imaging and be repositioned after 24 hours of failure in manual operations. If we don’t have these kind of satellites it shame on us that we can send a satellite to moon and we don’t have something to protect us. We had them and didn’t use them we still dumb. I mean we know that this technology existed 20 years ago.
All these points come to only one conclusion that we were ill equipped for urban combat and the terrorists knew exactly that, when are we going to take preventive actions against knee jerk reactions ?, I mean even hollywood movies show better tactical experience than what we have seen so far (I know movie is a movie  and only good things happen), When can we expect our people to trained at that level. I know that we will return to our own little worlds in a few days, but at least now, let us ask some questions, and let somebody be responsible. We have to do something about all these, try to bring some change, but I certainly don’t think taking arms is the answer. We need some one to on top to think about these things, setup a fedaral agency with proper powers at least in these kind of situations to deal with these matter.

Hoping that this time would something different is going to happen …
